Idrissa Gueye sent off for aggression in Premier League match

The Everton midfielder, Idrissa Gueye, was sent off for violent conduct in the 13th minute of the Premier League match against Manchester United. The incident occurred after Gueye hit his teammate, Michael Keane. The altercation occurred after an incorrect pass from Gueye to Keane in Everton’s penalty area, which generated an opportunity for Bruno Fernandes. Referee Tony Harrington immediately showed Gueye the red card. Subsequently, Jordan Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye had to restrain Gueye to prevent him from continuing to argue with Keane. The referee’s decision to show Gueye the red card for violent conduct was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, considering the action to be a clear blow to Keane’s face. The expulsion forced coach David Moyes to make a tactical change, just three minutes after Seamus Coleman had to leave the field due to injury in his first start of the season in the Premier League.

The match was tied 0-0 when Gueye was sent off. However, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored a goal to put the visitors ahead 1-0 shortly after Everton were down to 10 men. Everton managed to keep Manchester United at bay despite playing with one man less throughout the second half, achieving an unexpected victory at Old Trafford.

I think it was just a moment of madness. It was avoidable, but Idrissa apologized to all of us at the end of the match and said what he had to say. We move on. The reaction of the guys after that is incredible. We could have easily crumbled and lost the match comfortably, and if anything, it made us grow as a team.

This is not the first incident of this kind in football. The most recent instance occurred when Ricardo Fuller, of Stoke City, slapped his teammate and captain Andy Griffin on December 28, 2008, in a match against West Ham.
