Grimsby Sanctioned by the EFL After Carabao Cup Victory

Grimsby Town has been fined by the EFL due to the fielding of an ineligible player in their surprising Carabao Cup victory against Manchester United last week.

The Mariners defeated United 12-11 in a penalty shootout, after leading 2-0 in regulation time before being caught.

The EFL stated that the infringement related to Clarke Oduor, who came on as a substitute in the 73rd minute.

The player’s registration was submitted at 12:01 p.m. the day before the match, shortly after the 12 p.m. deadline required according to the competition rules for this season.

The League Two club has been fined £20,000, with £10,000 suspended until the end of the season, which would be activated if they fielded another ineligible player in any EFL competition.

The EFL communicated that Grimsby reported the infraction once they discovered the error the day after the match.

The EFL stated that the issuance of a fine followed precedent after a thorough review of all evidence and considering previous decisions regarding infringements in the League Cup.

The EFL board determined that the club’s non-compliance was not deliberate, with no intention to deceive or mislead.
