Lionel Messi lived a night full of emotions after playing his last official match in Argentina, in the 3-0 victory over Venezuela in the World Cup qualifiers. The match took place at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, where the Argentine star expressed that finishing this way in front of his fans was something he “always dreamed”. Messi, with two goals, led the Argentine national team in the resounding victory, with a goal by Lautaro Martínez. When asked about his participation in next summer’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, Messi cautiously replied: “We’ll see”.

There are so many emotions, I have experienced so many things on this court. It’s always a joy to play in Argentina with our people. We have enjoyed match after match for many years. I am very happy; being able to finish this way here is what I always dreamed of.

The Argentine star recalled the affection received over the years, mentioning his time at Barcelona and the desire to feel that same affection in his country. He highlighted the unity of the group and the moments experienced, including the achievement of important achievements. “Today was the last one for points here,” Messi affirmed. Argentina entered Thursday’s match leading the CONMEBOL standings with 35 points in 16 matches, already qualified for the 2026 World Cup. Although Messi expressed his desire to participate in the World Cup, he will continue to evaluate his physical condition day by day in the months leading up to the tournament to determine his viability.

Just like I said before about the World Cup, I don’t think I’ll play another one. Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it. But hey, we’re already close, so I’m excited and motivated to play it. As I always say, I go day by day, game by game. That is, taking it day by day, seeing how I feel.

Messi, top scorer and player with the most matches in the history of Argentina, debuted in the World Cup in 2006 at only 18 years old. Since then, he has been a fundamental piece for Argentina, leading the Albiceleste to the finals of the 2014 and 2022 World Cups, and finally lifting the trophy in Qatar. Argentina is now preparing to face Ecuador in the last match of the FIFA window in Guayaquil. Messi announced that he will not participate in this last qualifying match.
