Olivier Giroud Explains His Time at LAFC and His Return to France

The experienced striker Olivier Giroud has revealed the reasons behind his move to the MLS team, LAFC, and how the style of play didn’t suit his characteristics. Giroud, who is now returning to French football, has shared his perspectives on this stage in his career. The 38-year-old player’s contract with LAFC was scheduled to expire at the end of this year, but both parties mutually agreed to the termination so that Giroud could join Lille as a free agent. Lille, who finished in fifth position in Ligue 1 last season, will be the goalscorer’s new destination.

The style of play in MLS didn’t necessarily suit me. Returning to France 13 years later is an incredible opportunity and challenge for me.

Giroud, France’s all-time top scorer with 57 goals and a 2018 world champion, failed to shine at LAFC as expected, scoring only five goals in 38 matches, despite being popular with the fans. Before his time in MLS, Giroud left the French league in 2012, after helping Montpellier win Ligue 1, scoring 21 goals. Subsequently, he played for Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan, where he left a significant mark for his goalscoring ability and teamwork.

With Chelsea, Giroud won the Europa League in 2019 and the Champions League in 2021, as well as the FA Cup. He was also key in the Serie A title that AC Milan obtained in 2022. Giroud assures that his physical condition allows him to face the challenges of the French league and that he still has much to contribute to Lille.

I feel good physically, don’t worry. I am ready to take on the challenge. I feel good for my age and I want to play until my body says enough.
