Gasperini Takes the Reins at Roma

Experienced coach Gian Piero Gasperini has been appointed as the new head coach of Roma, the Serie A club announced this Friday. The 67-year-old strategist’s contract has a duration of three years.

Gasperini left Atalanta on Saturday, after nine years at the helm of the team. At Roma, he will replace Claudio Ranieri, who retired. Last season, Roma finished in fifth position in the table, securing a place in the Europa League, a trophy that Gasperini already won with his previous club.

On Friday, it was announced that Ivan Juric, former Southampton coach, will replace Gasperini at Atalanta.

Claudio Ranieri, after initially coming out of retirement to help the club this season, will now take on the role of senior executive advisor at Roma.

“Gasperini’s career is defined by his creative tactics, his dedication to hard work, and his exceptional development of players,” reads a statement from Roma.

“Both the property and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission.” In his nine seasons at Atalanta, Gasperini led the Bergamo club to win the Europa League in 2024, to six top-four finishes in Serie A, and to the Champions League quarter-finals.

“I need a significant challenge,” Gasperini stated in an interview published by Roma. “I really believe that all the conditions are in place to do a good job.”

Juric, 49, who played under Gasperini at Crotone and Genoa, was part of the Italian’s coaching staff during his brief stint at Inter Milan in 2011, and became his assistant at Palermo the following year.

Atalanta finished third in Serie A last season, which will give Juric his first Champions League experience as a coach, and in the league he will face Gasperini, who became the coach of AS Roma on Friday.
