Tomas Soucek Loses Captaincy and Bonuses After Snubbing Czech Fans
The Czech Football Federation took drastic measures after the last World Cup qualifying match, stripping Tomáš Souček of his captaincy and denying financial bonuses to the national team players. The punishment comes after the footballers ignored their fans after the match against Gibraltar, a match that, despite the 6-0 victory, left a bittersweet taste due to the team’s overall performance during the qualifying phase. The match, played in Olomouc, secured the second place in Group L for the Czech Republic. However, the lack of appreciation for the fans, who had expressed their discontent with the team’s performance, was the trigger for these sanctions. The team will be in the draw next March for the 16-team playoffs, where they will seek one of the remaining four spots for next summer’s World Cup.In addition to the loss of the captaincy for Soucek, the players will not receive the economic bonuses corresponding to the match. This money will be allocated to charity. The fans have every right to express their disagreement with the unsatisfactory performance in the last matches. The players’ reaction should have been the opposite. They should have thanked the fans.
