Soucek Loses Captaincy and Bonuses for Disrespecting Czech Fans
The Czech Football Federation took drastic measures after the World Cup qualifying match against Gibraltar. Tomáš Soucek was stripped of his captaincy and financial bonuses were denied to the national team players. The decision came after the players ignored their fans following the 6-0 victory in Olomouc on Monday. Despite the victory, the supporters had expressed their dissatisfaction with the team’s performance during the qualifying phase. The team, already assured of second place in Group L, showed no appreciation to the fans present, which generated criticism. The punishment includes the loss of the captaincy for Soucek and the redirection of financial bonuses to charities.
During the match, the fans repeatedly chanted “Fight for Czechia!”, reflecting their frustration with the team. The Czech selection had difficulties in the qualifying phase, which led to the dismissal of coach Ivan Hasek after a defeat against the Faroe Islands. A new coach could be appointed for the playoffs. The last time the Czech Republic qualified for the tournament was in 2006.Fans have every right to express their disagreement with the unsatisfactory performance in recent matches. The players’ reaction should have been completely the opposite. They should have thanked the active fans.
