Curaçao Makes History: The Smallest Nation to Qualify for a World Cup

Curaçao’s selection has achieved an unprecedented feat, becoming the smallest country to qualify for the final phase of a World Cup. The Caribbean team secured its place after a 0-0 draw in the last matchday of the Concacaf qualifiers.

This island, with a population of only 156,115 inhabitants and an area of 444 square kilometers, has surpassed the record previously held by Iceland.

Curaçao, led by former Premier League coach Dick Advocaat, who was absent from the match against Jamaica for personal reasons, completed an undefeated qualifying campaign.

On their way to qualification, the team achieved an impressive 7-0 victory over Bermuda, securing their participation in the tournament to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada next summer.

The group stage draw, where Curaçao will learn its rivals for its historic first participation in a World Cup, will take place on December 5th at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
