Crystal Palace vs. UEFA Case: Closed-Door Hearing

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed that a closed-door hearing will be held on August 8 in the case involving Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and Lyon. The Crystal Palace was relegated to the Conference League, the third UEFA club competition, by the UEFA Club Financial Control Body, due to a case of multi-club ownership. On the other hand, Lyon will be able to participate in the Europa League. The Eagle Football Group is the majority shareholder of Lyon, while its president, John Textor, also holds a majority stake in Palace. Textor later resigned from Lyon’s board of directors, and Michele Kang was appointed president.

The Crystal Palace appealed the decision, and the CAS confirmed that it will hear the case next month. If Palace’s appeal fails, Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, will take their place in the Europa League.

The Palace had qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup last season, while Lyon entered the competition by finishing sixth in Ligue 1. However, the French club was allowed to keep its place having finished higher in its respective league. A failure is not expected on the same day as the hearing, but a decision is expected by August 11th.
