Cristiano Ronaldo close to another historic record with Portugal
Portugal’s selection was on the verge of securing its place in the 2026 World Cup, thanks to the outstanding performance of Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored two goals in the 2-2 draw against Hungary in Lisbon.
Despite not achieving direct qualification, Ronaldo broke a new record in his brilliant career. His two goals were crucial for this achievement.
Ronaldo’s first goal allowed him to surpass Carlos Ruiz of Guatemala as the top scorer in the history of the World Cup qualifying phase, reaching 40 goals. With the second goal, he extended his lead to 41 goals in 50 qualifying matches.
Ronaldo scored both goals in the first half, putting Portugal ahead after Hungary took the lead with a goal from Attila Szalai. However, Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai scored in stoppage time of the second half, securing the draw for the visitors and frustrating the celebrations of Roberto Martínez’s team.
This result left Portugal with 10 points in four matches, while Hungary was in second place with five points. Qualification for the World Cup could be secured in November, when Portugal faces Ireland and Armenia.
With these two goals, Ronaldo has a total of 948 goals in his career, both at club level and with the national team. In addition, he has scored five or more goals in five of the six World Cup qualifying cycles in which he has participated.
It is expected that Ronaldo, who will turn 41 next summer, will be part of the team that will seek the first title for Portugal in the World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
