“Chicharito” Hernández in the Eye of the Hurricane for Statements on Gender Roles The soccer player Javier “Chicharito” Hernández is at the center of a controversy after expressing his opinions on gender roles on his social media. The statements of the Mexican striker have generated reactions, including comments from public figures.

Chicharito is a very good soccer player, but when it comes to his opinion about women… he still has a lot to learn.

Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, described the former Mexican national team player’s ideas as “very sexist” during a press conference. Currently, “Chicharito”, who plays for Chivas, is injured and has not participated in the first matches of the Apertura tournament. Over the weekend, Hernández posted several videos and reels, mainly on Instagram, where he expressed his views.

In one of his posts, Hernandez stated: “Don’t be afraid to be women, to let yourselves be guided by a man… Women, you are failing, you are eradicating masculinity, turning society hypersensitive.” The all-time top scorer for the Mexican national team, with 52 goals, returned to Mexico last year after signing a two-year contract with Chivas, the team where he began his professional career in 2006. In another of his posts, Hernandez added: “You, women, need to learn to accept and honor masculinity.”
Chicharito has scored just two goals in Liga MX since joining Chivas.
Chicharito ha anotado solo dos goles en la Liga MX desde que se unió a las Chivas.
In another video, Hernández said: “They want a man to provide, but for you, cleaning is patriarchal oppression… interesting.” Sheinbaum, who was elected as the first female president in the history of Mexico, responded: “I am a mother, I am a grandmother, I am also a homemaker, but I am also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Women can be whatever we want.” Hernández, a divorced father of two, has a habit of kneeling on the field to pray before matches. Previously, he created content for a YouTube channel where he showed his life as a player at West Ham and his marriage. Before these statements, Hernández maintained a low profile on social media, until he hired life coach Diego Dreyfus, to whom many attribute the footballer’s new image. Following his recent statements, criticisms arose, urging Hernández to focus on football, given that his performance since his return to the Mexican league has not been as expected. Hernández, who also played for Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, Sevilla and LA Galaxy, has scored only two goals in 25 matches in his first two tournaments in Mexico. Neither Chivas nor the Mexican Football Federation have issued comments regarding this. The Federation’s code of ethics establishes sanctions for members for offensive or discriminatory statements, but so far, no one has been sanctioned for misogynistic comments. Earlier this year, businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, owner of the Mazatlán and Puebla clubs, made harsh statements about journalists, without receiving a sanction. Hernández hasn’t played for the national team since 2019, amid reports of an unauthorized party in New York after a match against the United States.
