Carlos Cuesta, former assistant to Mikel Arteta, takes over as coach at Parma.
Parma, a team in the Italian Serie A, has announced Carlos Cuesta as its new coach. The young 29-year-old Spanish coach signs a two-season contract and faces his first challenge as head coach.
Cuesta takes over from Cristian Chivu, who recently joined Inter Milan.
During the last five years, Cuesta was Mikel Arteta’s right-hand man at Arsenal.
From a young age, Cuesta focused his career on technical direction, starting in the lower categories of Atlético de Madrid. After a training period in Spain, he traveled through Europe to delve into training methods.
In that period, he met Arteta, who at that time was part of Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City. After two years in the Juventus youth academy, Cuesta joined Arsenal in 2020.
His work at Arsenal was key in the development of players, standing out for his focus on individual development, both in technical and tactical skills.
Cuesta, who masters six languages, including Italian, made a great impression on Arteta. Furthermore, his time at Juventus coincided with the presence of Federico Cherubini, current CEO of Parma.
Cuesta becomes the youngest Serie A coach in almost a century. In 1939, Elio Loschi was 29 years, 9 months and 20 days old when he managed his first match as a player-coach at Triestina.
The Spanish coach will turn 30 years and 26 days old when he sits on the bench for Parma’s first match, curiously against Juventus.
