Marc Brys denies resignation as Cameroon coach

Cameroon’s coach, Marc Brys, has denied his departure from the position, despite the fact that the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) confirmed his departure on Wednesday. The Belgian coach assures that his email was probably hacked and that the resignation letter was not issued by him. This new episode adds to the tense relationship between Brys and FECAFOOT, which dates back to his appointment by the Cameroonian Ministry of Sports in April 2024. A letter dated July 21st, supposedly sent by Brys to the Ministry of Sports and FECAFOOT, indicated his decision to terminate the contract “due to the non-payment of my remuneration and that of my staff for more than 60 days”. Following the publication of the letter on Wednesday, FECAFOOT issued a statement in which it took note of the resignation and announced a “coordinated response to mitigate the impact of this vacancy in the management of the national team’s technical staff”. However, Brys later responded with a letter to the Ministry of Sports, in which he stated that his email had probably been hacked and that he had not resigned. The Cameroonian Ministry of Sports confirmed that Brys remains in his position. FECAFOOT has not responded to the coach’s denial.

This situation arises five months before the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and with Cameroon’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup still to be decided. Brys has maintained a tense relationship with the president of FECAFOOT, Samuel Eto’o, since he took office last year, despite his position being funded by the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education. Cameroon has been drawn in a group with the current champion, Ivory Coast, Gabon and Mozambique in the final phase of the CAN, which will be held from December 21 to January 18. Currently, they hold the second position in their qualifying group for next year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, one point behind Cape Verde, with four matchdays remaining. Only the first team qualifies directly for the final phase, and Cameroon will face a crucial away match against Cape Verde in September. The qualifying phase will conclude in October.
