Montse Tomé Moderates Aitana Bonmatí’s Enthusiasm for the Debut in the European Championship

Spanish coach Montse Tomé has revealed that she must control the eagerness of Aitana Bonmatí, who is desperately seeking to be a starter in the opening match of the European Championship against Portugal. The midfielder is recovering from viral meningitis that kept her hospitalized. Bonmatí, winner of the Ballon d’Or two consecutive times, was hospitalized last Friday, but was discharged on the weekend and joined her teammates in Switzerland on Monday.

Aitana’s evolution has been really positive. She will have some work with the rest of the team in the last session before the match.

Tom highlighted Bonmatí’s urgency to play, pointing out the need to moderate her impetuosity, although everything is positive. “Her health comes first. It hasn’t been an ideal situation, but fortunately she has recovered quickly,” added the coach. Goalkeeper Cata Coll was also doubtful for the match against Portugal due to tonsillitis, but Tomé indicated that the Barcelona player will be ready to start in the Stadion Wankdorf. Spain will not have its captain, Irene Paredes, who is serving the second match of her suspension for a red card received during the qualifying phase for the tournament. In Group B, alongside Spain and Portugal, are Italy and Belgium. “La Roja” is considered a favorite to advance to the quarterfinals and, possibly, win the tournament. England, Germany, and France are some of the teams that are emerging as Spain’s main rivals, who have never won the European Championship and haven’t reached the semi-finals since 1997.

All teams are 200% prepared to try to win every game. We are going to try the same,” she stated.

Our goal right now is to win tomorrow; then, in the short term, to get out of the group. But we are ambitious and want to win everything.

Guijarro added that it’s flattering that others are watching Spain’s game, but emphasized the importance of focusing on themselves in the European Championship, where every match is crucial.
