Bielsa Confirms His Continued Leadership of Uruguay After the Defeat Against the United States

The Uruguayan national team coach, Marcelo Bielsa, expressed his “shame” after the 5-1 defeat against the United States, but confirmed his commitment to continue leading the team until the 2026 World Cup. The press conference took place in Montevideo on Thursday, amid speculation about his possible resignation, after the team’s worst defeat since 2012.

“My inclination to give a press conference after losing 5-1 against the United States arose from the need to explain, especially after a defeat like that, which always generates concern,” Bielsa stated.

Bielsa analyzed the situation with the sports director, Jorge Giordano, and shared the concerns of the president of the Uruguayan federation, Ignacio Alonso. The coach emphasized that the project will continue as planned until the World Cup, after an extensive conversation with the president.
Marcelo Bielsa dijo que continuaría como entrenador de Uruguay a pesar de la dura derrota por 5-1 ante Estados Unidos.
Uruguay finished the November window with a 0-0 draw against Mexico and a loss against the United States. Goals from Sebastian Berhalter, Alex Freeman, Diego Luna, and Tanner Tessmann sealed the American victory. Bielsa took over as Uruguay’s coach in May 2023 and has maintained his enthusiasm since day one. Previously, he coached Argentina and Chile at the international level, and clubs such as Athletic Club, Leeds United and Marseille. Uruguay qualified for the World Cup after finishing fourth in the CONMEBOL table, with 28 points in 18 matches. The draw for the World Cup will take place on December 5 in Washington, D.C.
