Bielsa Confirms His Continued Role Leading Uruguay After the Defeat Against the United States

Uruguay’s national team coach, Marcelo Bielsa, expressed his “shame” after the 5-1 defeat against the United States, but reaffirmed his commitment to continue in the position until the 2026 World Cup. These statements were made at a press conference held in Montevideo on Thursday, amid speculation about his possible resignation after the heavy defeat. Bielsa, visibly affected by the result, explained the need to give explanations after a result that generated concern among fans and the press. The Argentine coach did not hesitate to describe the defeat as something that “cannot be ignored”.

“Losing 5-1 is something that generates shame,” Bielsa stated.

The coach detailed that, after a personal analysis of the defeat, he shared his concerns with the sports director, Jorge Giordano, to obtain a professional and specific view of the team’s performance. In addition, Bielsa revealed that the president of the Uruguayan football federation, Ignacio Alonso, conveyed his concerns to him, to which he responded.

The match against the United States, played in Tampa, Florida, was preceded by a 0-0 draw against Mexico. Goals from Sebastian Berhalter, Alex Freeman, Diego Luna, and Tanner Tessmann sealed the victory for the American team.

Despite the adverse result, Bielsa confirmed that the president of the Uruguayan federation has reiterated his support for the project ahead of the World Cup. “The conclusion is that the project will continue exactly as planned until the World Cup,” Bielsa assured, summarizing the conversations with the president.

Bielsa took over as Uruguay’s coach in May 2023 and has emphasized that he maintains the same energy and enthusiasm as the first day. The 70-year-old coach has previously managed the national teams of Argentina and Chile, as well as clubs such as Athletic Club, Leeds United and Olympique de Marseille. Uruguay qualified for the World Cup after finishing in fourth place in the CONMEBOL table, accumulating 28 points in 18 matches. The draw to determine their rivals in the World Cup will take place on December 5 in Washington, D.C.
