The AS Monaco and US men’s national team striker, Folarin Balogun, expressed his enthusiasm to impress the USMNT coaching staff in his first camp with the national team in a year. Balogun, who has overcome a series of injuries in recent months, including a shoulder injury that required surgery, is now in optimal condition to prove his worth. The 24-year-old player is eager to participate in the upcoming matches against South Korea and Japan, with next year’s World Cup on the horizon.

“With Mauricio’s arrival, the goal was clear: he wanted to boost the group,” Balogun commented. “As players, we are not surprised to compete for a position. We want to make our mark, it’s natural. The World Cup is a great competition and it’s important to stand out.”

Balogun, recovered from a calf injury, scored his first goal of the season with Monaco in the 3-2 victory over Strasbourg. Currently, he feels in great physical and mental shape, thanks to the support of Mauricio and his team.

“I feel good. The injuries are a thing of the past. It was a difficult period, but I think every athlete goes through that,” he stated. “The first impressions of Mauricio and his team have been very positive. They have welcomed me well and the opinion of the other players is excellent. Everyone is delighted to have them here.”

Balogun acknowledges the importance of balancing the desire to impress with not overthinking things, especially after being away from the team for so long.

“It’s important to make a good impression, but you shouldn’t exaggerate because things get complicated,” he explained. “When I wasn’t called up, I knew the priority was to be healthy. Now I think I’m in good shape. It’s something I’ve done my whole career, fight for my place.”

Furthermore, the challenge of establishing a connection with players with whom, in some cases, he has never played is raised. Balogun is confident that this will not take long. “We all play football at a high level. As attackers, we look for creativity and different ways to break down defenses. I don’t think it will take long to adapt and I’m looking forward to playing with everyone,” he concluded.
