Luis Muñoz makes history in the UEFA Youth League with Arsenal
The young Arsenal footballer, Luis Muñoz, has set a new record in the UEFA Youth League by becoming the youngest player to participate in the tournament. At just 13 years old, Muñoz has made his mark on the European youth competition.
Muñoz, born on December 18, 2011, came on as a substitute in the match that Arsenal Under-19 played against Bayern Munich, a match that ended with a 4-2 victory for the English side.
This achievement surpasses the previous record set by Liam Payas, who played for Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar last year at the age of 14 years, three months and one day.Muñoz, international with the England Under-15s, was one of the young players called up by Arsenal to gain experience in the competition.
The UEFA Youth League follows the format of the Champions League, involving the Under-19 teams of the clubs participating in the main competition, as well as the national youth champions of the UEFA member associations.
This season, eligible players are those born on or after January 1, 2007, with the possibility of including up to five players born in 2006 in the squad.
Munoz hopes to follow in the footsteps of 15-year-old Max Dowman, who has debuted in the first team managed by Mikel Arteta this season and was a starter in Wednesday’s youth match, scoring the first and fourth goals.
In addition to Muñoz, another young Arsenal player, Emerson Nwaneri, brother of first-team midfielder Ethan, also made his UEFA Youth League debut, coming off the bench.
