Xabi Alonso Defends Vinícius Júnior’s Reaction After Substitution

Coach Xabi Alonso has defended Vinícius Júnior, following the player’s reaction to being substituted during Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Espanyol in LaLiga. Vinícius was replaced by Rodrygo in the 77th minute at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, with the score in favor of Madrid by 2-0. The Brazilian winger showed his discontent when substituted, throwing a water bottle to the ground and raising his arms, before speaking with the coach.

“Vini just lacked the goal today,” Alonso commented in the press conference after the match.

Alonso explained that the decision to substitute Vinícius was based on the need to bring freshness to the team. In addition, he mentioned that Franco Mastantuono, who was also substituted at the same time, reacted similarly. Mastantuono was replaced by Brahim Díaz.

Vinicius was substituted in the match against Espanyol.

“It’s normal,” added Alonso, when asked about Vinícius’ reaction. “Franco also left a little angry. In the end, it happens to everyone.”

The coach was satisfied with the performance of Vinícius and Mastantuono, and highlighted the demands of the schedule, which requires rotations. So far this season, Alonso has left Vinícius out of the starting eleven twice in six matches across all competitions. Additionally, the match against Espanyol marked the return of Jude Bellingham, who came on as a substitute in the final minutes, adding his first minutes of the season.

“The more we find Bellingham, the better we will play,” Alonso said. “He played in the Club World Cup, but the team was different from now, we have been growing since August. Now with Jude and Eduardo Camavinga we have two more alternatives, two great players, and that’s good news.”
