Ajax vs. Groningen Match Suspended Due to Incidents
An Eredivisie match between Ajax and Groningen, played at the Johan Cruyff Arena, was suspended due to incidents caused by fans. The match was stopped after fireworks and flares were lit behind one of the goals. Referee Bas Nijhuis led the players off the field five minutes into the start. When trying to resume the game, the situation was repeated, which led to the definitive suspension. The Dutch club confirmed that the match will resume behind closed doors on Tuesday, December 2nd.
In the statement, the club also detailed the security measures implemented. The spectators present in the affected area were registered. Ajax will investigate the camera recordings to identify those responsible and take appropriate action.Ajax considers what happened in the stadium scandalous. We offer our apologies to anyone who has been affected. The safety of spectators and players has been compromised, which is unacceptable. We explicitly distance ourselves from this behavior. Fireworks should not be in the stadium.
