Ajax on the verge of collapse: Is the Eredivisie title vanishing?
Ajax is on the verge of a disastrous end to the season in the Eredivisie, after conceding a draw in the 99th minute against Groningen. This result has jeopardized their title aspirations, in what could be one of the biggest collapses in football history.
With one matchday remaining, Ajax, who once had a nine-point lead over PSV, is now second in the table, one point behind their rival. The team needs PSV to drop points in their match against Sparta Rotterdam and, in turn, win their match against FC Twente to avoid a place in the infamy of the Eredivisie.
It’s very disappointing that we no longer have things in our own hands.
Davy Klaassen, Ajax midfielder
Ajax faced Groningen in a crucial match, where a draw in the final minute dealt a harsh blow to their championship hopes. The team took the lead thanks to Anton Gaaei’s goal in the 27th minute, but Groningen equalized in the 52nd minute. Wout Weghorst put Ajax ahead again in the 68th minute. In added time, Groningen, despite playing with ten men after Luciano Valente’s expulsion, managed to tie the match in the 99th minute through Thijmen Blokzijl.

Following the draw, a fight broke out between the players of both teams. Midfielder Davy Klaassen expressed his disappointment at not being self-dependent, while winger Mika Godts lamented the situation, highlighting the coach’s effort to raise the team’s morale.
PSV, for its part, has achieved a winning streak, which has placed them in an advantageous position. PSV captain Luuk de Jong acknowledged that, with the points advantage they had, it was difficult to imagine a comeback, but now they are one step away from winning the title.
Ajax coach Francesco Fariola remains hopeful and assures that the team will not give up until the end. Ajax clings to the possibility of winning their last match and hoping for a slip-up by PSV to win the championship.
