Tyler Adams in doubt for Gold Cup after injury

Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams could miss the United States’ friendly against Switzerland on Tuesday and is a doubt for the start of the Gold Cup, according to coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Tyler is out for tomorrow, because he suffered a small problem in his foot. I hope it’s not a big problem. I think we can manage it well, and rest him for a few days, and then see if he can be ready for the Gold Cup.

Adams’ absence represents another setback for the 26-year-old player, who has dealt with several injuries since the 2022 World Cup. After the 2024 Copa América, Adams underwent back surgery that kept him off the field until October. Since his return, Adams has played three matches with the U.S. national team.

During the press conference, Pochettino also modified his stance on the players’ free time, after asking them in May: “If you arrive at the camp and want to have a good time, play golf, go to dinner, visit my family, visit my friend, that is the culture we want to create?”

Following his comments last month, Pochettino highlighted on Monday his willingness to be more flexible.

I am the first person, along with my coaching staff, who likes players to have free time, to be able to spend time with their families. What I have always said is that when you have done your job, when you are free from your responsibilities, then yes, you can do what you want.

Tuesday’s friendly will be the second and final preparation match for the USMNT before the Gold Cup. On Saturday, Pochettino’s team suffered a 2-1 defeat against Turkey. Despite the latest defeat, the American coach said he was not entirely disappointed with the result.

I think the first 20 minutes were an example of what we, as a coaching staff, aim to convey to the team, and I believe it was quite close to what we were actually expecting. When you have different players, it’s a challenge to find that performance, right? It’s not easy. You need time.

After playing against Switzerland, the USMNT will begin its participation in the Gold Cup group stage with a match against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15th.
