Aaron Ramsey joins Pumas UNAM

Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey, with a past at clubs like Arsenal and Juventus, will continue his career in Mexico. The 34-year-old player has officially signed with Pumas UNAM, a team in the Liga MX. Ramsey, who already has a work visa to play in the MX League, arrived in Mexico City on Tuesday to undergo medical examinations before signing his contract. I am excited to play and be part of this historic club, I can’t wait to be on the field.

The Pumas are considered one of the four most popular teams in the country, although they haven’t won a title since the Clausura 2011 tournament.

I’ve seen some [Liga MX] matches and I’m very impressed, there are very good teams here and I’m excited to be in this competition now.

The Pumas coach, Efraín Juárez, who is represented by the same agency as Ramsey, was fundamental in bringing the player to Mexico City. Ramsey finished last season as interim coach of Cardiff City, his hometown club, which was relegated from the Championship to League One. With 86 appearances for the Wales national team, the midfielder helped his country reach the semi-finals of Euro 2016. In April, Ramsey stated that the “World Cup is a great carrot”, and now the Wales captain will seek to maintain his form ahead of the 2026 tournament. Despite being one of the traditional “big four” of the Liga MX, the Pumas have struggled. In the last season, the team from Mexico City finished in tenth place in the regular season and was eliminated in the play-in round of the playoffs. Starting in July, the Pumas will also participate in the Leagues Cup, a joint tournament of Liga MX and MLS. Ramsey will face Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami CF on August 6.
