Kelsey Mitchell Reveals Details of Her Medical Condition
Indiana Fever All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell shared details about the medical condition that affected her during Tuesday night’s WNBA semifinal game. According to Mitchell, a condition prevented her muscles from functioning properly, leaving her unable to move her legs. The concerning situation occurred in the third quarter of the game against the Las Vegas Aces, which resulted in a 107-98 overtime loss. This victory secured the Aces their third WNBA final in four years, eliminating the Fever after a standout performance in the playoffs. The incident occurred when All-Star Aliyah Boston committed her fifth foul while setting a screen for Mitchell, who was heading towards the basket. Mitchell fell to the ground, and players and coaches gathered around her to assist her. Although a stretcher was prepared, it was not needed. Mitchell managed to stand up and was taken to a hospital for treatment.Mitchell expressed her gratitude to the coaches and doctors who attended to her in the arena and in the hospital, and stated that she is recovering. The 29-year-old player, former Ohio State star, was key in Indiana’s outstanding season. After being selected for her third All-Star Game, she led the team in scoring during the regular season, averaging 20.2 points. In the playoffs, she maintained an average of 22.3 points in 32.6 minutes in eight games. The Fever played without four key players, including Caitlin Clark, due to season-ending injuries. Despite the adversities, Indiana, led by Mitchell, managed to win their first playoff series in a decade, overcoming a 1-0 deficit in the first round against Atlanta. The team took the Aces, the second seed, to a decisive fifth game and overtime, despite losing Boston to fouls and Mitchell to cramps.“I suffered from something called rhabdomyolysis last night. My muscles stopped producing and reached their maximum capacity,” Mitchell wrote. “I went into a feeling of numbness/paralysis without movement of my lower extremities for about 5 to 7 seconds.”
