The selection process involves voting by the 30 managers and up to six coaches per team. They cast their votes on players in their league, excluding those on their own team. The votes of the managers and coaches represent 75% of the final result, while the SABR Defensive Index (SDI) contributes the remaining 25%.

Since 2022, the utility player award is also given, using a special defensive formula developed between Rawlings and SABR, regardless of the traditional process.

The presence of six Dominicans among the finalists highlights the defensive quality of Dominican talent in baseball, reaffirming the strong presence of the Dominican Republic in the MLB awards.
