Concern in Scotland: Lana Skeldon suffers injury in match against Ireland

Scottish hooker Lana Skeldon was stretchered off the field after suffering a worrying injury during the first half of the friendly match against Ireland, prior to the Women’s Rugby World Cup. The match, which ended in a 27-21 defeat for Scotland, cast a shadow of uncertainty over Skeldon’s participation in the tournament. The Bristol player, with 81 caps, showed obvious signs of pain and received prolonged medical attention eight minutes before halftime at Musgrave Park. Scotland, who will begin their participation in Group B against Wales in three weeks, led the scoreboard 14-0 at that moment, thanks to Lisa Thomson’s conversion and the subsequent addition of points after Lucia Scott’s try.

Skeldon’s departure affected the visitors’ rhythm, and Ireland took advantage to close the gap on the scoreboard, reaching halftime with a disadvantage of only two points. Sadhbh McGrath and Meabh Deely scored tries for the home team, with a conversion by Dannah O’Brien. Ireland completed the comeback in the first six minutes of the second half, with a try by Nancy McGillivray. Emma Orr managed to put Scotland ahead again, but Niamh O’Dowd, for Ireland, scored a try that gave them the lead 22-21. Ireland secured the victory three minutes before the end with a try by Deirbhile Nic a Bhaird, leaving Scotland with two consecutive defeats before the World Cup, after last week’s fall in Italy, and awaiting news on Skeldon’s availability.
