The Wales selection was knocked out of the Women’s Rugby World Cup after being surpassed by Canada, with a score of 42-0 at the Salford Community Stadium. After a 38-8 defeat to Scotland in the opening match the previous weekend, Wales needed to beat Canada, ranked second in the world, to keep their quarter-final hopes alive. Although they dominated the territory and possession at first, Canada took the lead with a score of 28-0 shortly after the half-hour mark, thanks to the two tries by McKinley Hunt and those by Alysha Corrigan and Asia Hogan-Rochester. In the second half, Taylor Perry and Brittany Kassil scored, while Georgia Evans was cautioned with a yellow card. Sophie de Goede converted all six tries, demonstrating Canada’s potential. Canada secured its place in the quarter-finals after Scotland’s victory over Fiji, which also confirmed Wales’ elimination. Wales and Fiji will face each other in a group stage match next weekend.

Wales, who were without co-captains Alex Callender and Kate Williams due to injuries, conceded a try after 55 seconds against Scotland, but reacted to put pressure on Canada. Lisa Neumann was close to catching a ball, and Bethan Lewis failed to secure a cross-pass near the try line. With Wales’ lineout failing, Canada took advantage of the first 10 minutes and increased the pressure in the opposing field, which led to Hunt scoring under the posts. Hunt’s try, after an assist from Alex Tessier and De Goede, was a hard blow for Wales, who then suffered three more tries in five minutes. Corrigan was the first to score in the 26th minute, completing a play that stretched the Welsh defense, while Hunt celebrated his second try shortly after. Since the restart, Hogan-Rochester broke through on the wing, running 60 meters to score the bonus try for Canada.

A try by Gabrielle Senft was disallowed for some infringements after the break, although Evans was shown a yellow card for a high tackle. With 14 players, Wales was even more outmatched when Canada, repeating the strategy, recycled the ball for Perry to score, before Kassil scored after a maul. Kassil’s try came with 26 minutes remaining, but Canada saw forward Olivia DeMerchant cautioned with a yellow card for a high tackle, and managed the game in the final minutes, resisting Wales’ effort.
