United States Bids Farewell to the Women’s World Cup Despite Thrashing Samoa

Despite a resounding victory over Samoa with a score of 60-0, the United States national team was eliminated from the Women’s Rugby World Cup. The American team secured the necessary bonus point in the first 30 minutes of the match in York, generating anticipation for the match between Australia and England that would be played later. However, Australia’s defeat to the hosts (47-7) secured them a place in the quarter-finals, as they avoided a loss by more than 75 points. The United States demonstrated its power from the start of the match. Ilona Maher, one of the team’s figures, recovered the ball in the center of the field, which allowed Freda Tafuna to open the scoring.

The second try came after a well-executed play from the touchline, where Hope Rogers, a veteran of the team, found space to score in her fourth World Cup. Samoa, demonstrating the resilience that characterizes it, forced its rival to strive for the third try, which was again scored by Rogers. The fourth try, crucial for the team, was the result of a great play by Keia Mae Sagapolu. Cassidy Bargell, scrum-half, managed to score under the posts. With the bonus point secured, the goal was to increase the points difference, although a margin of 135 points was needed to surpass Australia in the event of a tie. The American team broke free and Erica Coulibaly scored the fifth try in the first half.

The points kept coming after the break. Erica Jarrell-Searcy scored shortly after the restart, followed by Tafuna, who proved to be a try-scoring machine in this tournament, scoring her second try of the match. After another phase of Samoan resistance, Tafuna achieved his hat trick. The United States could regret the lack of conversions, with only five converted out of ten tries. Tafuna, however, contributed a fourth try shortly after the game clock. Olivia Ortiz, who came off the bench, scored the team’s tenth try, bringing the score to 60 points.
