Tandy, impacted by Rees-Zammit's return to Welsh rugby
Steve Tandy, the new Wales coach, revealed his astonishment at learning of Louis Rees-Zammit’s return to rugby. Tandy, who was introduced as the new Wales coach, shared his initial reaction upon learning of the player’s return. Rees-Zammit had been in the NFL for the last 18 months after announcing in January 2024 his retirement from rugby to pursue his dream in American football.

My eldest daughter told me, that was a bit worrying. She said ‘¡Zammit come home!’ And I was like ‘¡Aaaaaargh. Give me the phone!’ That’s how I found out.

The return of Rees-Zammit is a great boost for the team, the game, and the fans. Tandy, who takes over on September 1st, could count on the 24-year-old player for the autumn matches against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa in Cardiff.

Rees-Zammit has expressed a “lot of interest” in his services, but his future in rugby is not yet defined. Abi Tierney, CEO of the Welsh Rugby Union, was also enthusiastic about Rees-Zammit’s return, highlighting the challenge of coordinating his integration into the national team due to the start of the season in September.

I am delighted that Louis is returning to rugby because he gives it to us for the national team.
