James Slipper Extends His Rugby Legend: One More Year with the Brumbies

Australian rugby veteran James Slipper will continue his distinguished career with the Brumbies in 2026, after signing a one-year contract extension. At 35 years old, Slipper will return to Canberra to play his eighth season with the team, two-time tournament champion. His Super Rugby debut dates back to 2010 with the Reds.

The Wallabies prop is on the verge of becoming the second Australian to face the British & Irish Lions in two different series, in July, after having been part of the team that lost 2-1 in 2013.

Slipper could set a new record for matches in Super Rugby, currently held by Wyatt Crockett (202).

With 195 appearances in Super Rugby before this weekend’s match, interestingly against the Crusaders, Slipper will add at least one more match, as long as he stays in form, as the Brumbies have already secured a place in the finals.

“When there was an option on the table to play another season for the Brumbies, I couldn’t say no,” Slipper stated in a Brumbies press release.

Slipper expressed his gratitude to the club for the opportunity provided in 2018 and his desire to continue demonstrating the trust placed in him. In addition, he expressed his love for representing the club and being part of the group, highlighting how incredible it is to play rugby in Canberra and enjoy life in the city.

The experienced player stated that he feels in the best physical shape of his career and believes that he still performs at a high level, contributing to the team. Therefore, he will continue to give his best for the Brumbies.

While Slipper will continue with the Brumbies, he has not yet confirmed whether he will also continue his Test match career with the Wallabies.

The player, who is already the Wallaby with the most matches played in history, after surpassing George Gregan last year, had suggested that the series against the Lions could be his international farewell.

However, given the scarcity of loosehead props in Australia and Slipper’s ability to play on both sides of the scrum, he could surpass 150 matches if he continues in the Rugby Championship and beyond.

“Slipps is the ultimate professional, with an incredible work ethic. He is a world-class player who continues to perform for us season after season,” commented Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham.

Larkham highlighted Slipper’s extraordinary level of play in the current campaign, emphasizing his set-piece play, defense, carrying, and leadership, which have been crucial for the team. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of his experience in the front row, guiding the young players.

The coach expressed his satisfaction with Slipper’s decision to extend his career in Canberra with the Brumbies.
