Louis Rees-Zammit returns to the Wales national team this autumn, marking his return to rugby after an attempt in the NFL. After two years away from rugby, Rees-Zammit, who previously signed with the NFL through the International Player Pathway (IPP) Program, had stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 24-year-old player decided to return to rugby in August, signing with the Bristol Bears. During his absence, Wales suffered a streak of 18 consecutive losses, from the 2023 Rugby World Cup to a test match in Japan. This period also saw the change of coach, with Steve Tandy replacing Warren Gatland.

Louis Rees-Zammit spent 18 months with the NFL before returning to rugby in August.
Rees-Zammit is part of a 39-player squad that includes five debutants: Danny Southworth, Brodie Coghlan, James Fender, Morgan Morse and Louis Hennessey. Also present is Rhys Carre, the Saracens prop. The coach Steve Tandy expressed his enthusiasm for the selection process and the quality of the players. “There’s a good mix of youth and experience,” he stated. “We have arrived at the selection decision, with which we are very happy. There is a very good mix of some young players coming in, mixed with some experience as well. But the overall feeling is really exciting and I can’t wait to take the boys to camp on Monday.”

A notable absence is Will Rowlands, who announced his retirement from international rugby after 41 matches for Wales. Tandy lamented the loss of Rowlands, highlighting his contribution to the team. “Will has been a great servant to the game in Welsh rugby. He has been an exceptional player and a great human being in the environment,” said Tandy.
