Louis Rees-Zammit Returns to Rugby

American football player Louis Rees-Zammit has announced his return to rugby, a sport in which he previously excelled. Rees-Zammit announced his decision via social media on Thursday night, informing that he will leave the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL.

“It has been a great experience, but it’s time to go home. I have decided that this is the best time to make this decision and give myself time to prepare for next season.

The Welsh athlete expressed his enthusiasm for returning to rugby, a sport in which he shone with Wales and was part of the British & Irish Lions. Rees-Zammit did not provide more details, but promised more news soon. The 24-year-old player signed with the Kansas City Chiefs at the end of March 2024 as part of the International Player Pathway program, designed to give athletes from around the world the opportunity to play in the NFL. The Chiefs used Rees-Zammit, who ran the 40 yards in 4.43 seconds, as a running back and participated in all three preseason games, carrying the ball six times for 22 yards. The Chiefs cut Rees-Zammit on August 27 in the final roster cuts, and the Jaguars signed him the next day. He was moved to wide receiver and practiced with the Jaguars’ practice squad during the 2024 season, but was never promoted to the active roster. The Jaguars included him on their 90-player roster in February. Jacksonville started training camp on July 23, but Rees-Zammit suffered a lower back injury in the team’s second practice and was limited in the following five.
