The British and Irish Lions delivered their best performance of the tour so far, achieving a resounding 48-0 victory over an invitational team from Australia and New Zealand. The AUNZ team, although it seemed disjointed, had numerous players of test match level. The Lions coach, Andy Farrell, will be satisfied with his team’s performance.

Henry Pollock deserves a spot on the test team

Regardless of whether he’s a starter or not, Henry Pollock deserves a place in Andy Farrell’s test team and would be a valuable asset against the Wallabies. From his debut with England in the Six Nations, with two tries against Wales, to being named for the Lions tour, Pollock has had a sensational year. He brings youthful enthusiasm to the team off the field, but most importantly, he is a real challenge for the opposition on the field, with 11 runs for 24 meters and making 15 tackles in Adelaide. He played the full 80 minutes against AUNZ and gave his all until the end, scoring a first try for the Lions thanks to his perseverance for the ball and his nose for opportunities. Even after that, a few minutes from the end, he was encouraging his teammates, demonstrating his drive to win and dominate. Play without fear and it will be a real challenge for the Australian defenders.

The Lions’ best performance comes at the right time

A week out from the first test match, Andy Farrell wanted to see a cleaner, more polished performance in Adelaide, and he got it. While many of those who played on Saturday will miss next week in Brisbane, their efforts will raise the standards of the entire group.

It could also have given Farrell more headaches in terms of selections, just when he thought he might be close to knowing his best team. Blair Kinghorn’s availability is unclear due to an injury, but Hugo Keenan was solid at fullback. Mack Hansen also played a brilliant game on the wing, putting pressure on Tommy Freeman. Ben Earl was named Player of the Match with 14 carries and 11 tackles, but Jack Conan is still expected to start at number 8. Regardless, Farrell has spoken of promoting standards and competition for positions and will certainly be pleased after Saturday’s efforts.

Owen Farrell has a lot to offer

Owen Farrell is officially a four-tour Lion after coming on as inside center in the second half. Certainly, he didn’t seem out of rhythm despite being a late addition and after a season plagued by injuries, with some nice touches and a crucial hand in two tries. Whether he is chosen for the tests is another matter, but his inclusion in the team brings two advantages. First: he has invaluable experience and offers incredible leadership. Within minutes of entering Adelaide, he was giving orders and organizing his team. Second: He has the flexibility to play at 10 or 12 and would be supported to fit into a match in either of those positions. He’s a great asset for the Lions.
