John Mitchell Extends His Contract as England Women’s Rugby Coach

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has confirmed the renewal of John Mitchell’s contract as coach of the England women’s rugby team, extending it until the end of the 2029 World Cup. Mitchell guided the Red Roses to victory in the World Cup last year, overcoming Canada in the final held at Twickenham in September. Now, the New Zealand-born coach will have the opportunity to seek consecutive titles with the national team.

I am pleased to extend my time with the Red Roses. This extension provides continuity throughout a World Cup cycle and allows the program to operate with a clear long-term vision.

Mitchell highlighted the work done in the last three years, which have been challenging but rewarding, achieving success at the highest level and allowing the authenticity of the players within the Red Roses. That period has helped establish solid standards, clarity of purpose, greater connections, and a winning culture. The players have a high regard for Mitchell, as England has not yet lost a match under his direction.

This emerging group has the opportunity to continue leading our game globally. By pushing for higher standards and continuously seeking new performance improvements, the program can build on what is already in place and drive new trends.

Immediate attention, however, is set on 2026. There is a strong feeling of unfinished opportunities within the group, and that will shape our preparation, training focus, and the continuous drive to elevate our level as we build our hunger for a dynasty. Emily Scarratt, who retired as a player after the World Cup, will join Mitchell’s coaching staff. England will begin the defense of their Six Nations title at home against Ireland on April 11.
