The British and Irish Lions secured a victory, albeit with some difficulty, in Canberra on Wednesday night. While the Wallabies face a crisis in the fly-half position, the tourists seem to have their half-back pairing resolved. Jamison Gibson-Park, named Player of the Match, and Finn Russell orchestrated the Lions’ triumph over the Brumbies with a score of 36-24. Garry Ringrose, Dan Sheehan, Tadhg Furlong, Jack Conan and Marcus Smith, who came on as an early replacement, also stood out. Gibson-Park controlled the pace of the game and distributed the ball excellently to Russell, who once again demonstrated his precision in passing. Despite a “knock-on” and a risky pass near their own try line, Gibson-Park had a near-perfect performance.
This was the second time Gibson-Park and Russell played together from the start on this tour, after their performance against the Reds in Brisbane. Although Russell also started in the victory against the Force, this Lions starting halves pairing is likely to rest for the first Test at Suncorp Stadium. The Wallabies, on the other hand, do not have that same stability, with uncertainty about who will play in the opening position after Noah Lolesio’s neck injury.“The forwards gave us a good platform, which makes my job easier,” Gibson-Park stated to Stan Sport after the match. “Also, having world-class players around me, with Finn Russell directing the game, makes it very enjoyable.”

Smith, for his part, could be the last man in the fullback position. With Elliot Daly already ruled out and Hugo Keenan having had a difficult night in Sydney against the Waratahs, the tourists lost Blair Kinghorn to a leg injury 25 minutes into the match in Canberra. Smith, who came off the bench, assisted in a Ringrose try before scoring another on his own.“There’s a class difference, if you watch numbers 9 and 10, they’re playing at a different tempo and speed, that’s what Test players and experienced Test players do,” O’Gara commented.
