The British and Irish Lions began their summer tour of Australia with a resounding 54-7 victory over Western Force in Perth on Saturday.
The Lions hooker, Dan Sheehan, scored in the first minute of the match at Optus Stadium. Despite a contested first half, with a score of 21-7 at halftime, the Lions managed to impose their game.
The second half was a festival of scoring, with tries from Tomos Williams, Elliot Daly, Garry Ringrose, Joe McCarthy and Alex Mitchell, surpassing the fifty-point mark.Los British and Irish Lions obtuvieron su primera victoria del verano contra Western Force. This victory is a great confidence boost for the team, after the 28-24 defeat against Argentina in their farewell tour in Dublin.
The match also left negative news for the Lions. Scrum-half Williams suffered a hamstring injury after scoring in the 46th minute, his second try of the match. Head coach Andy Farrell confirmed that Williams suffered a “hamstring strain” and would be evaluated.
Henry Pollock, in his first start with the Lions, had an outstanding performance. He made a break that led to a try, and a “chip-and-chase” that gave him position for another, in addition to a yellow card at the end of the first half.
Opening fly-half Finn Russell, who converted five of six conversions before being replaced, offered a masterclass in play, solidifying his position as a favorite to lead the Lions’ attack line in the test series against Australia at the end of July and August.
The solitary try by Wallabies veteran scrum-half Nic White did not do justice to Force’s contribution.
Sheehan, in his Lions debut, gave them the perfect start with a try in the first two minutes. White responded in the fifth minute, during a period of sustained pressure.
The Lions’ defense drew criticism, but they withstood four penalties before scoring a second try.
Pollock provided the third try, and Russell, with a quick penalty kick, surprised Force, allowing Daly to score.
