In a match that bordered on perfection, British and Irish Lions captain Maro Itoje shone with a stellar performance in his first match in Australia. After witnessing the Lions’ overwhelming victory over the Western Force from the sidelines, Itoje demonstrated his determination from the start, leading the team and constantly challenging the Queensland Reds’ attacking line and ruck. His game with the ball elevated his performance to another level.

Itoje: The Undisputed Leader

Itoje’s influence was felt all over the field. His tireless work allowed him to equal teammate Jac Morgan in the tackle count, with 18. In addition, he blocked several Reds lineouts and stood out at the breakdown, achieving two ball recoveries. A ball steal in the first half set up the Lions’ first try, calming initial nerves after falling behind on the scoreboard. An interception in the second half facilitated their team’s exit from their own 22-meter zone, culminating in Huw Jones’ incredible try in the 65th minute.

Itoje’s power with the ball in hand was notable. With 10 carries, he covered 31 meters and made two line breaks, leading the attack and opening the way for the Lions’ powerful back line.

“It’s a bit of both, to be honest,” Itoje commented in the post-match press conference when asked about his motivation. “I think the purpose of these tours is to be with great players and see great players performing well, which gives you extra motivation to perform well.”

Itoje highlighted the importance of camaraderie and genuine support within the team, something he has experienced on this tour.

Jac Morgan also had an outstanding performance, solidifying his candidacy for the first test after being named Player of the Match. His 18 tackles, three ball recoveries and nine carries for 49 meters, along with his try in the 56th minute, completed a near-perfect match.

“I thought Jac Morgan was everywhere,” said Lions coach Andy Farrell when asked about Morgan’s performance.

Farrell praised Morgan’s ability to play in any position, highlighting his speed and aggression in both tackling and carrying.
Hunter Paisami proved a hand full in the midfield against the Lions.

On the other hand, the Reds found no answer to the Lions’ game. Despite maintaining competitiveness at the beginning, the team crumbled before halftime. The young media couple, Kalani Thomas and Harry McLaughlin-Philips, were overwhelmed by the Lions’ defense, and Thomas’s decisions when running the ball were questionable. Josh Cannam and Joe Briel stood out in the forward pack, with Briel dominating in almost every contact and setting up Jeffrey Toomaga-Allen’s first try. Their defense was also impressive, with 12 tackles and a ball recovery. Hunter Paisami, from the Reds, caught the attention of coach Joe Schmidt before the first test in Brisbane. Despite not being a starter, Paisami reminded Schmidt of his destructive capacity by beating five defenders, making two line breaks and not failing in defense, with 10 perfect tackles.

“We expected a little less from Hunter,” commented Reds coach Les Kiss, about Paisami’s performance. “It was important for us. And I think that throughout the 80 minutes he kept giving his best, even in the kicking game he had, I think there was a kick that almost gave us the point. He was very good tonight.”

With a total of 106 points scored in two matches, including 52 on Wednesday night, the Lions have shown their potential, leaving Schmidt with the task of figuring out how the Wallabies can face this powerful force.
