In a match that bordered on perfection, Maro Itoje, captain of the British and Irish Lions, shone brightly in his first match in Australia. His performance, crowned with a try in the 45th minute, was a clear example of leadership and dedication. After watching the Lions’ victory over Western Force from the sidelines, Itoje showed a voracious hunger for success. He led from the front line, constantly challenging the attacking line and the breakdown of the Queensland Reds. His ability to carry the ball elevated his game to a new level. Itoje left his mark on the match with an outstanding work ethic, matching teammate Jac Morgan with 18 tackles. In addition, he frustrated several Reds lineouts and dominated the breakdown, winning two turnovers. An early steal in the first half set up the Lions’ first try, calming any initial nerves. An interception in the second half helped their team clear their own area and ultimately led to Huw Jones’ incredible try in the 65th minute.

His performance with the ball in hand was equally impressive. With 10 carries, he advanced 31 meters, including two line breaks. Itoje led the attack, facing the Reds’ defense and helping to unleash the power of the tourists’ back line.

I think the goal of these tours is that you are with great players and you see great players performing well and that gives you extra motivation to perform well.

Morgan, for his part, was another standout figure, solidifying his candidacy for the first Test in two weeks. His performance, which included 18 tackles, three turnovers, and nine carries for 49 meters, was crowned with a try in the 56th minute, sealing a near-perfect match.

I thought Jac Morgan was everywhere.

The Reds, on the other hand, found no answers against the Lions’ game. Their midfield pairing, Kalani Thomas and Harry McLaughlin-Philips, were outmatched by the opposing defense. Josh Canham and Joe Brial stood out in the forward pack, with Brial dominating the encounters and setting up the first try. Their defense was equally impactful, with 12 tackles and a turnover. Hunter Paisami, from the Reds, caught Joe Schmidt’s attention ahead of the first Test in Brisbane. Paisami proved his worth, beating five defenders, making several incursions into the line and completing 10 tackles.

We expected nothing less from Hunter. He was important for us. And I thought that for 80 minutes he kept working, even the kicking game he had as well, I think there’s a kick he put in there that almost got us the money as well. He was very good tonight.

Les Kiss, Reds coach
With a total of 106 points scored in two matches, the Lions have demonstrated their power, leaving Schmidt with much to think about how the Wallabies will be able to face this force.
