Scott Robertson Steps Down as All Blacks Coach
In a surprising decision, Scott Robertson has left his position as coach of the All Blacks, just two years after taking on a four-year contract. The announcement was made by New Zealand Rugby (NZR) on Thursday afternoon. NZR issued an official statement stating: “Scott Robertson has stepped down as head coach of the All Blacks. We wish Razor all the best in his next steps. A process will immediately begin to recruit a new head coach.” According to reports, All Blacks team leaders had expressed criticisms about Robertson’s strategy, communication, and selections, especially after a 2025 season with disappointing results, including unexpected defeats against teams like South Africa, Argentina, and England.NZR chairman David Kirk noted that the midpoint of the World Cup cycle, prior to the 2027 tournament, was the right time to assess the team’s situation and take action. “Both NZR and Scott agree that it is best for the team that he step down as head coach,” Kirk added. In a statement, Robertson expressed his disappointment at the decision. “Coaching the All Blacks has been the honor of my life. I am incredibly proud of what this team has achieved and the progress we have made. We have formed a talented group of young players, strengthened the depth throughout the team, and established solid foundations for the years to come.” “Following the end-of-year review, I’ve taken some time to reflect on some of the feedback. My priority has always been the success of the All Blacks and, after conversations with New Zealand Rugby, I believe the best thing for the team is for me to step aside,” Robertson continued. “Therefore, I have reached an agreement with New Zealand Rugby to terminate my contract early, so that a new coaching group has the necessary time to prepare and take the team to the next World Cup. As you can imagine, I am very affected by this result. I care deeply about this team.” Previously, key assistants Leon MacDonald and Jason Holland had already left the program. Robertson, known for his unprecedented success with the Crusaders in Super Rugby, is also leaving the team before the 2026 international season. Robertson took over as All Blacks coach in early 2024, after being announced in November 2023.The team is preparing for an important schedule in 2026, and the 2027 tournament remains the key objective. We have thoroughly analyzed the team’s progress on and off the field and subsequently had conversations with Scott about the path forward.
David Kirk, NZR Chairman
