Walman Decides the Game in Overtime for the Oilers
Defenseman Jake Walman, recently activated after an injury, scored in overtime, giving the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.
Walman, acquired last season and key to Edmonton’s advance to the Stanley Cup final, was injured in a preseason game on September 21. The 28-year-old player proved his worth with 25 shifts on the ice, totaling 18:51 minutes of play and recording four blocks.
The Oilers wrapped up their five-game road trip and handed the Senators their second straight home loss.
The Senators tied the game 2-2 in the third period with two goals in a span of 1:25. Ottawa scored after winning a puck battle near the boards. Drake Batherson assisted Dylan Cozens, who scored on the power play against Stuart Skinner, who made 19 saves. Just over a minute later, Thomas Chabot beat Skinner to tie the game.
The Oilers opened the scoring late in the first period with a power-play goal, when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins assisted Connor McDavid, who scored his first goal of the season from the top of the face-off circle.
Edmonton extended its lead to 2-0 at 49 seconds into the second period after a Senators turnover. Leon Draisaitl advanced and passed the puck to rookie Isaac Howard, who beat Linus Ullmark, who finished with 22 saves, scoring his first NHL goal.
