In a comeback that has thrilled hockey fans, Jonathan Toews has reached a significant milestone in his career. The player, after almost two and a half years of waiting, recorded his first point in the NHL.

“I guess, putting it that way, it’s good to get that weight off your shoulders,” Toews commented after the Winnipeg Jets defeated the New York Islanders 5-2.

Toews assisted on Nino Niederreiter’s goal in the Jets game, earning a secondary assist. His last appearance on the scoresheet was on April 13, 2023, in his final game with the Chicago Blackhawks before taking a break due to health issues. The player, visibly excited, expressed his desire to score his first goal and highlighted the importance of focusing on the game, confidence, and creating opportunities. After overcoming the effects of chronic immune response syndrome and long COVID-19, Toews, 37, chose to return to his hometown team, expressing that he feels physically well while regaining his rhythm.

“I’m still finding my way a little bit. It takes time for it to become natural. And then you have to find your game. You have to go out and relax a little bit. The first two games I felt like I was getting tired at the end of shifts, because you’re just overskating everything and overworking yourself. It’s better to be safe than sorry, and sometimes less is more,” he added.

Toews, who led the Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup on three occasions, was recognized as one of the 100 best players in the history of the league. His teammate and friend, Patrick Kane, expressed his joy at Toews’ return to hockey. In addition to his success in the NHL, Toews has won two Olympic gold medals with Canada. An exciting matchup is expected on December 31st, when Winnipeg visits Detroit. Currently, Toews is averaging more than 17 minutes of ice time as the second-line center for the Jets. Coach Scott Arniel has used him in penalty-killing situations, but is looking not to overload him.

“He’s getting better every day. That’s what we talked about, he and I, that it wasn’t going to happen overnight. Every day, he’s been improving and I think he’s recognizing how to play the game with his intelligence in hockey.

Toews’ goal is to be selected for the Canadian Olympic team and help the Jets win the Stanley Cup. His teammates value his leadership and experience in the league.
