CALGARY, Alberta – Jonathan Toews celebrates his first goal with the Winnipeg Jets, his hometown team.
Toews scored a tying goal in the third period during Monday night’s 2-1 victory against Calgary. This achievement marks the three-time Stanley Cup champion’s first goal since April 13, 2023, a span of 2 years and 189 days.
Toews’ return to Winnipeg comes after missing the previous two seasons due to the effects of chronic immune response syndrome and COVID-19.
He began his career in Chicago, where he led the Blackhawks to titles in 2010, 2013, and 2015. He was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs during the franchise’s first championship since 1961.
Winnipeg was down 1-0 to Calgary before Toews deflected Neal Pionk’s shot, beating Flames goalie Dustin Wolf at 2:41. This was the player’s 373rd career goal, selected 3rd overall in the 2006 NHL draft.
Toews became the third Winnipeg native to score for the Jets since the 2011-12 season, joining Eric Fehr and Cody Eakin.
At 37 years and 174 days old, he also became the fifth-oldest player at the time of his first goal with the Jets/Thrashers franchise.
