Sharks Corrected Error in Celebration Banner
The San Jose Sharks are in the process of correcting an error on a banner recently installed at the SAP Center. This banner celebrated an achievement that the team did not actually obtain.
The franchise updated the banners in its stadium before the start of the NHL season. The new banners feature a smaller team logo and a larger font. In addition, the team’s six division titles were condensed into a single banner, instead of the six individual ones that existed.
However, a new banner caught the attention of fans, both online and during Sunday’s preseason game against the Vegas Golden Knights. The banner commemorated the Sharks’ supposed triumph in the Presidents’ Trophy of the 2015-16 season, an award given to the team with the best record in the NHL regular season. The only problem is that the Sharks finished 11th in the league that season, finishing 22 points behind the Washington Capitals, who actually won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2015-16.
The Sharks did reach the final in 2015-16, losing to the Penguins in six games.
The most likely cause of the error: The Sharks did win the Presidents’ Trophy in 2008-09, the only time the franchise finished in first place in the NHL regular season. This achievement did not have a banner in its honor on Sunday night.
The Sharks president, Jonathan Becher, stated on Sunday that it was a “printing error” that the team was already aware of. Becher stated that the Sharks “have already ordered a replacement banner.”
