San Jose Sharks Correcting a Banner Error

The San Jose Sharks are in the process of correcting an error on a banner recently placed in the SAP Center. This banner commemorated an achievement that the team, in reality, did not obtain. The team renovated the banners in their stadium for the upcoming NHL season. The new ones feature a smaller team logo and a larger font. In addition, the team’s six division titles were condensed into a single banner, instead of six individual ones. However, a new banner caught the attention of fans online and during Sunday’s preseason victory against the Vegas Golden Knights. The banner celebrated the Sharks winning the Presidents’ Trophy in the 2015-16 season, an award given to the team with the best regular season record in the NHL.
The problem: The Sharks finished in eleventh place in the league that season, 22 points behind the Washington Capitals, who actually won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2015-16. The Sharks did reach the final in 2015-16, losing to the Penguins in six games. The likely cause of the error: The Sharks won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2008-09, the only time the franchise finished first in the NHL regular season. That achievement did not have a banner in its honor in the stadium on Sunday night. The Sharks president, Jonathan Becher, said on Sunday that it was a “printing error” that the team was already aware of. Becher stated that the Sharks “have already requested a replacement banner.”
