Matthew Schaefer Makes History with Goal in Extra Time
In an exciting NHL encounter, Matthew Schaefer, a player for the New York Islanders, became the youngest player to score an overtime goal during a regular season game. The Islanders defeated the Utah Mammoth with a score of 3-2, extending their overtime winning streak to three consecutive games.
Schaefer, at just 18 years and 70 days old, surpassed the record previously set by Sidney Crosby, who achieved a similar feat at 18 years and 101 days.
Schaefer’s goal came at 2:08 of overtime, sealing the victory for the Islanders. Jonathan Drouin and Emil Heineman also contributed goals for the Islanders, while Tony DeAngelo added two assists.
David Rittich, the Islanders’ goalie, made 27 saves, including 16 in the last two periods, demonstrating a solid performance between the pipes.
On the part of the Mammoth, Dylan Guenther and JJ Peterka scored the goals. Karel Vejmelka, the Utah goalie, made 18 saves.
The game was full of intensity, with the Islanders managing to tie the score 2-2 with 6:16 left in regulation. The goal, initially disallowed, was validated after a video review.Emil Heineman opened the scoring for the Islanders, scoring his second consecutive goal in the first period. JJ Peterka tied the game with his sixth goal of the season.
The Mammoth managed to break their streak of seven games without scoring on power-play plays, thanks to Dylan Guenther’s goal.
Coming off an overtime win against Las Vegas, the Islanders showed great resilience, matching the Mammoth’s energy with solid defense and neutralizing five of six power-play opportunities.
