Matthew Schaefer Makes History: Extra-Time Goal Crowns Him as the Youngest Player

In an exciting NHL encounter, Matthew Schaefer, at just 18 years and 70 days old, became the youngest player to score an overtime goal during a regular season game. The New York Islanders defenseman achieved this feat with a powerful slap shot at 2:08 of overtime, securing his team’s victory over the Utah Mammoth with a final score of 3-2. This victory marks the Islanders’ third consecutive overtime win and their fourth win in a row overall. Jonathan Drouin and Emil Heineman also contributed to the scoreboard for the Islanders, demonstrating once again the team’s strength. David Rittich, Islanders’ goalie, had an outstanding performance by stopping 27 shots, including the 16 made after the first period.

Schaefer, selected first overall in this year’s NHL draft, already has 15 points, the most among rookies in the league.

Schaefer surpassed the record previously set by Sidney Crosby, who was 18 years and 101 days old when he scored an overtime goal on November 16, 2005. On the Mammoth’s side, Dylan Guenther and JJ Peterka were the scorers, standing out in the 100th game of the Utah franchise. Karel Vejmelka, the goalie, made 19 saves. Despite being the team that best limits shots on goal in the NHL, the Mammoth could not maintain their home advantage, falling to a 5-1-1 record. The 2-2 tie came for the Islanders at 6:16 of the end of the game, after the puck, after bouncing off Drouin’s skate, was touched by the stick of Utah defenseman Nate Schmidt, crossing the goal line. Initially disallowed, the goal was validated after a video review.
A sus 18 años y 70 días, el novato de los Islanders, Matthew Schaefer, rompió el récord de Sidney Crosby como el jugador más joven en anotar un gol en tiempo extra en un partido de temporada regular.
Heineman opened the scoring at 7:13 of the first period, scoring the first goal of the game for the second consecutive time. Peterka tied the match with his sixth goal of the season, with less than 7 minutes remaining in the first period. The Mammoth broke their streak of seven games without scoring on power-play plays when Guenther scored with a slap shot over Rittich’s shoulder, during a 5-on-3 situation, with 1:25 left in the first period, putting his team up 2-1. This was the first time this season that the Islanders conceded a two-man disadvantage goal. The Islanders, who were coming off a win against the Vegas Golden Knights in overtime on Thursday, showed great energy and defensive solidity, neutralizing 5 of 6 power-play opportunities for the Mammoth.
