San Jose Sharks Without Defined Captain for Next Season

The San Jose Sharks will face the upcoming NHL season without a designated captain, opting for a rotation of five players who will act as assistants. Coach Ryan Warsofsky announced on Wednesday that Tyler Toffoli will wear the “A” in all games. Macklin Celebrini and Barclay Goodrow will also assume the role in home games, while Mario Ferraro and Alexander Wennberg will do so in away games.

Each of the players who will make up our leadership group for the 2025-26 season brings important skills and character to the locker room. These individuals embody what it means to be a Shark, and the identity we want to have as a team. As a coaching staff, we are excited to have each of these players in a leadership role and setting an example for the rest of the group.

This decision marks the first time since the 2014-15 season that the Sharks will not have a designated captain for the entire season. Joe Pavelski was named captain the following season, and Logan Couture succeeded him starting in the 2019-20 season. Couture was the captain until last season, despite not having played. In April, Couture announced that he would not be able to play again due to a chronic injury in the groin and pelvis area.
