New York Rangers: Shesterkin to Injured Reserve and Fox Out Long-Term
The New York Rangers are facing a complicated moment after placing their star goalie, Igor Shesterkin, on the injured list and defenseman Adam Fox on the long-term injured list. This news comes after the team’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Utah Mammoth.
According to sources close to the team, initial assessments of Shesterkin suggest that the injury is not as serious as initially feared. Although he retired from Monday’s game due to a non-contact injury, the tests performed indicate that his absence could be from one to several weeks.
As for Fox, who recently returned from a 14-game absence due to an upper-body injury, he appears to have suffered a setback at the end of Monday’s game. Fox did not participate in overtime, where Utah’s Sean Durzi scored the winning goal.
Fox’s designation on the long-term injured list means he will have to miss 10 games and a minimum of 24 days, which means he will not be able to return to the team until January 31 against Pittsburgh.
Shesterkin, who has played 34 games this season, has a 2.52 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. The Vezina Trophy winner is in the first year of an eight-year, $92 million contract, making him the highest-paid goaltender in the league.
Faced with this situation, the Rangers will have to rely on their backup goalie, Jonathan Quick. The 39-year-old veteran, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, has had a 3-6-2 record with a 2.11 goals-against average this season.
The Rangers are currently out of the playoff spots, with 46 points after 44 games.
