Igor Shesterkin, Rangers Goalie, Suffers Leg Injury
The Rangers goalie, Igor Shesterkin, left the game against the Utah Mammoth due to a left leg injury. The unfortunate situation occurred in the middle of the first period of the match, which ended with a 3-2 defeat in overtime for the Rangers. The injury occurred when Shesterkin was trying to avoid contact with the Mammoth forward, JJ Peterka. Shesterkin’s leg bent in an unusual way as his skate was on the ice. The goalkeeper, visibly affected, was attended to by the medical staff and had to be helped off the court. He couldn’t put weight on his left foot. Jonathan Quick, the backup goalie, entered in his place. At the end of the first period, the team announced that Shesterkin was suffering a lower-body injury and would not return to the game.Quick, who has won three Stanley Cups, has played in three seasons with the Rangers and currently has a record of 3-6-2 with a 2.11 goals against average. Despite a solid performance, he allowed the last two goals of the game. Sean Durzi scored the winning goal for Utah in overtime, while Michael Carcone tied the score for the Mammoth in the third period. Shesterkin, winner of the Vezina Trophy in 2022, is in the first season of an eight-year, $92 million contract, making him the highest-paid player at his position in league history. This season, the Russian goalie has a record of 17-12-4 with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage, in his seventh season with the Rangers. We don’t want him to get injured. He’s an important part of this team. Let’s hope it’s not too serious. I don’t have an answer for you, because, obviously, they’re going to do more tests. But right now, they’re evaluating him.
Mike Sullivan, Rangers Coach
