Pittsburgh Penguins Bolster Goaltending with Acquisition of Arturs Silovs
The Pittsburgh Penguins have strengthened their position in goal with a recent acquisition. The team has closed a deal to obtain Arturs Silovs from the Vancouver Canucks.
In return, the Penguins sent forward Chase Stillman and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 draft to the Canucks.
Silovs, 24 years old, had limited participation with the Canucks last season, playing in only 10 games.
However, the 6-foot-4-inch Latvian goaltender proved his worth in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he led the Abbotsford Canucks to the Calder Cup championship, being named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the playoffs.
In 21 regular season games with Abbotsford, Silovs recorded a 14-5-2 record, with a .908 save percentage and a 2.41 goals-against average, the best of his career.
During his successful campaign to win the Calder Cup, Silovs compiled a 16-7 record in 24 games, with a 2.01 GAA and a .931 save percentage.
With five shutouts in the playoffs, Silovs was one short of tying the AHL’s all-time record in a single postseason. In addition, he became the fourth goaltender to be honored with the playoff MVP award.
Silovs’ contract extends through the 2025-26 season. In five seasons in the AHL, he has accumulated a record of 59-35-13, with a save percentage of .906 and a goals-against average of 2.58. In three years with Vancouver, he played in 19 games (18 as a starter), with a record of 8-8, a save percentage of .880 and a goals-against average of 3.13.
